The Best Weber Grills, and Which One to Buy

Weber makes a grill for almost every way of cooking outdoors: gas, charcoal, smokers, pellet, kamado, portable and electric. We have tested and scored 46 of them, across 14 of its lines, so this guide can answer the question the catalogue does not: which one is worth your money.

The short answer: for most people it is the Weber Spirit E-325 Gas Grill, which scores 8.6 at $499. If you cook for a crowd and want a grill that lasts, the Weber Genesis E-325 Gas Grill is our highest scoring Weber gas grill at 8.9. If you want charcoal, start with the kettle.

Spirit, Genesis or Summit?

These are Weber's three cart gas grill lines, from cheapest to dearest. Averaged over the 5 Spirit and 5 Genesis grills we scored, stepping up to Genesis gains on long-term reliability (7.6 to 9.0), and gives up some ease of use (9.1 to 8.5). In plain terms, Genesis is built to last longer, while Spirit is the easier, cheaper grill to live with. Averaged over the 5 Genesis and 1 Summit grills we scored, stepping up to Summit gains on maintenance (7.8 to 9.0), heat performance (8.8 to 9.5) and build quality (9.0 to 9.5), and gives up some long-term reliability (9.0 to 7.5) and value (8.0 to 7.5). Summit is for someone who wants the most power and features and will pay for them.

Which kettle?

Every Weber kettle cooks on the same idea, so the choice is size and convenience. Averaged over the 2 Original Kettle and 2 Performer grills we scored, stepping up to Performer gains on ease of use (7.3 to 9.2), maintenance (8.4 to 8.9), build quality (8.3 to 8.7) and heat performance (8.4 to 8.7), and gives up some long-term reliability (8.6 to 7.2) and value (8.1 to 7.2). The Original Kettle is still where most people should start; the extras on the dearer kettles make charcoal easier rather than better.

The best Weber gas grill

Weber Genesis E-325 Gas Grill

What we liked: Near $849 with a sear burner, while Weber lists the sear-less E-315 at $899. A 13,000 BTU sear burner on its own knob, which the otherwise identical E-315 spec table does not carry.

What we didn't like: The grease tray pulls straight out, but cast iron grates and a fourth burner add to every clean-down.

Key Specs

  • Sear zone burner, on its own knob: 13,000 BTU
  • The three main burners, per hour: 39,000 BTU
  • Grate and warming rack together: 641 sq in
  • Headroom the lid needs swinging up: 63 in

Type: Gas grill. Read our full Weber Genesis E-325 Gas Grill review.

The best value Weber gas grill

Weber Spirit E-325 Gas Grill

What we liked: Two Boost Burners give one grate two real working heats, at close to 86 BTU per square inch over the primary grate. Porcelain-enameled cast iron, stainless Flavorizer bars and a closed cabinet, at 98 pounds on two wheels.

What we didn't like: The grease tray slides out and empties fast, but chipped enamel on cast iron rusts.

Key Specs

  • Main burner input, per hour: 31,000 BTU
  • Primary cooking area: 360 sq in
  • Heat density, on Weber's own two figures: 86 BTU/sq in

Type: Gas grill. Read our full Weber Spirit E-325 Gas Grill review.

The best Weber charcoal grill

Weber Original Kettle Charcoal Grill 22

What we liked: Leads Weber's 22 in kettles on price: $149.00 buys the same 363 sq in fire the dearer models sell with extras attached. Lid and bowl dampers over 363 sq in run two zones well, but feeding a long cook means lifting the loaded, fixed grate.

What we didn't like: The lid hook and tool hooks help, but no thermometer is listed and refuelling means lifting the whole grate off the coals.

Key Specs

  • Primary cooking area, with no second tier above it: 363 sq in
  • Height, width and depth with the lid closed: 39.5 x 22.5 x 25 in
  • Weber Connect hub, the add-on that reports the fire: $139.99

Type: Charcoal kettle grill. Read our full Weber Original Kettle Charcoal Grill 22 review.

The best small Weber charcoal grill

Weber Smokey Joe 14 Charcoal Grill

What we liked: At $54.99 the bowl and lid carry the same ten years Weber puts on kettles costing several times more. Ten years against rust through on bowl and lid, five on plastics, two on the rest, over porcelain enamel.

What we didn't like: Porcelain wipes down and the catcher lifts away, but the feature list names no One-Touch sweep to push ash into it.

Key Specs

  • Cooking area, primary and total: 147 sq in
  • Bowl diameter: 14 in
  • Bowl and lid, against rust through: 10 years

Type: Charcoal grill. Read our full Weber Smokey Joe 14 Charcoal Grill review.

The best Weber smoker

Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker 18

What we liked: Ten years against rust through on bowl, lid and center ring, so the cover is longest exactly where rust starts. A wider barrel carries a bigger charcoal bed, and a bigger bed resists change better than the 14 inch model.

What we didn't like: One built-in reading, taken at the lid, on a cooker whose fire you otherwise cannot see at all.

Key Specs

  • Cooking area, across two grates: 481 sq in
  • Height, on a 19 in wide footprint: 41 in tall
  • Warranty, bowl lid and center ring: 10 years
  • Dampers, and no other heat control: 4

Type: Charcoal smoker. Read our full Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker 18 review.

The best Weber pellet grill

Weber Searwood XL 600 Pellet Grill

What we liked: A fuel gauge that alerts you at low pellets, two probes, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, all included. A 180 to 600 span with no large sheet diffuser is unusual reach for an auger-fed cooker.

What we didn't like: Weber covers the cook box for five years, and everything that burns or fails for three.

Key Specs

  • Total cooking area, over two grates: 972 sq in
  • Footprint with the lid down: 45.75 x 50.50 x 23.00 in
  • Sits on the upper grate, off the flame: 342 of 972 sq in
  • Extra headroom before the lid will open: 13.75 in

Type: Pellet grill. Read our full Weber Searwood XL 600 Pellet Grill review.

The best Weber kamado

Weber Summit Kamado E6 Charcoal Grill

What we liked: A three-blade stainless sweep and a lift-out ash pan replace the scoop a ceramic firebox needs. Ten years against rust through on an enamelled steel shell that cannot crack, though hinge and gasket get two.

What we didn't like: At $1,399.00 the cover is a separate $84.99 and the built-in fan port arrives without a fan.

Key Specs

  • Cooking area, all of it on one grate: 452 sq in
  • Grate diameter, edge to edge: 24 in
  • Extra headroom the lid needs to swing open: 14.5 in

Type: Charcoal kamado. Read our full Weber Summit Kamado E6 Charcoal Grill review.

The best portable Weber gas grill

Weber Traveler Compact Portable Gas Grill

What we liked: One lever, one knob, a self-locking lid, and 37 pounds against the larger Traveler's 49, with no assembly published. Glazed cast iron, a porcelain lid and a welded frame, identical to the $399.00 Traveler with nothing downgraded for the price.

What we didn't like: The five-year headline reaches the cookbox and lid only; the lever and hinges doing every trip's work sit in the two-year bracket.

Key Specs

  • One stainless tube, and no second zone: 11,000 BTU
  • Split cast iron under porcelain glaze: 240 sq in
  • Weber's own count, and the reliable one: 12 burgers
  • The width in Weber's table, not its copy: 34 in

Type: Gas grill. Read our full Weber Traveler Compact Portable Gas Grill review.

The best Weber electric grill

Weber Lumin Compact Electric Grill

What we liked: Cast iron under porcelain on a 26.00 pound body Weber says can be left outside in the rain. Enamel wipes clean and nothing burns to ash, though Weber sells drip pans separately and describes no built-in tray.

What we didn't like: The heating element carries two years while the cookbox, lid, grates and plastics all carry five.

Key Specs

  • Element power, same as the full-size Lumin: 1,560 W
  • Cooking area, one level: 180 sq in
  • Power density, derived: 8.7 W/sq in
  • Weight, with no legs under it: 26.00 lb

Type: Electric grill. Read our full Weber Lumin Compact Electric Grill review.

The best splurge Weber gas grill

Weber Summit Smart FS38X S Gas Grill

What we liked: 65,000 BTU under the food, a 16,000 BTU infrared broiler above it, and a rotisserie turning between them. 275 pounds of stainless on six casters, with solid 9mm rod grates carrying no coating that can chip.

What we didn't like: Weber backs the cookbox 15 years and the Weber Connect parts 3, on a grill you operate through glass.

Key Specs

  • The broiler above the food, not below it: 16,000 BTU
  • Primary grate, 19.25 by 35.75 inches: 681 sq in
  • Cookbox cover against Weber Connect cover: 15 years vs 3
  • No Weber assembly service will touch a Summit: 275 lb

Type: Gas grill. Read our full Weber Summit Smart FS38X S Gas Grill review.

FAQs

Should I buy a Weber Spirit or a Weber Genesis?

Buy the Spirit if you grill on weeknights for a family and want the easier, cheaper grill; buy the Genesis if you cook for crowds and want a grill built to last. In our scores Genesis averages 9.0 on long-term reliability against 7.6 for Spirit, while Spirit is the easier grill to use, 9.1 against 8.5.

Are Weber's smart grills worth it?

The Spirit EX-325 is the Spirit E-325 with Weber's connected thermometer system built in. It scores 8.6 against 8.6 and costs $599 against $499. Weber did not build a better Spirit here, it built one that reports back.

Is the Weber Summit worth it?

Only if you will use what it adds. The Summit we scored earns 8.7, against 8.9 for the best Genesis, at a much higher price. For most backyards a Genesis does the same cooking for far less.

How long do Weber grills last?

Longer than most. Across the 37 Webers on our six-category scorecard, long-term reliability averages 8.0, against 7.4 for every grill we have scored. It varies by line, from Genesis and the Smokey Mountain at the top to the electric and pellet models, whose electronics carry the risk.

Which Weber charcoal grill should I buy?

The 22 inch Original Kettle for most people. Step up to a Master-Touch or Performer for convenience, take a Smokey Mountain if you want to smoke, and a Summit Kamado if you want one charcoal cooker that does everything.
