How each brand scores

11 makers, 126 scored reviews, one fixed rubric — and the gap between each brand and the field on every axis. Sort by any column, or see all 141 grills one by one.

Built from the 141 reviews carrying the full six-category scorecard, of 184 published; the other 43 are older reviews with a headline score but no category breakdown. Those 141 reviews cover 20 brands. A brand needs 5 scored reviews to get a row here, which 11 of them clear, covering 126 of the 141 reviews. The other 9 brands are 15 reviews between them — listed below, and viewable in the table, but an average of one or two products is not a verdict on a maker.

Each is reviewed and scored like everything else and nothing is hidden from the table; what is withheld is the claim that an average of 3 or fewer products describes a maker. Each axis cell holds two different things. The number is the brand's mean on that axis, coloured on the same scale used everywhere on the site. The bar is the gap to the site mean printed in the last row — right and green for above the field, left and red for below. So they can disagree, and that is the point: a brand averaging 8.0 on Reliability is middling by the colour and a long way clear of the field, because the field averages 7.4 there.

Mean scores are averages of judgements, not measurements, and the brands here carry between 5 and 31 reviews — so a tenth of a point between two brands is noise, and a point is not. The rubric is fixed and weighted identically on every review, which is what makes the columns comparable at all; how we score sets out what each axis is judging. Every number here is derived from reviews you can open: the per-grill figures are on all grills ranked, and every category score in them carries a written justification.
