Most portable pizza ovens chase a wide door and a big floor. The Gozney Roccbox goes the other way. Its mouth stands just 3.5 inches tall, and a silicone skin wraps the whole body.
That small opening is a deliberate choice. It traps heat over the stone, so the floor stays hot between pies. It also limits what fits through it. Turning a pie once inside gets harder too.
So the question for the Roccbox, model GRPBKUS1615, is simple. Does a door that small give back more heat than it costs in pizza size? Handling room is part of the price as well.
First Impressions of the Gozney Roccbox
The box arrives at just under 53 lb, which tells you something before it is open. Inside sit the oven, a detachable propane burner, a metal peel and the manual. There is nothing to bolt together. You unfold the three legs, clip the burner on and connect a tank.
The finish is the first surprise. Rivals mostly show bare painted steel. The Roccbox wears a matte black silicone jacket over a stainless body. It feels like a rubber camera grip, not a cooking appliance.
Looking into the mouth, the scale becomes clear. The opening is a letterbox, 11.9 inches wide and only 3.5 tall. The dome sits low over the floor, close enough to throw heat straight down.
Our first bake went quickly once the floor thermometer climbed. The crust leopard-spotted underneath before the top had fully set. A few quick quarter turns evened it out. The result tasted charred and airy, with a crisp base that held when folded.
Key Features of the Gozney Roccbox
Gozney builds commercial ovens, and the Roccbox is pitched as a shrunken version of those. The features follow that brief. They favor heat retention over size and convenience.
- Silicone safe-touch jacket: The outer skin is the signature. It cuts the chance of a burn from brushing the side. Metal shells carry that risk.
- Stainless steel body: The structure under the jacket is commercial-grade stainless, per Gozney. You never see it, but it carries the weight of the stone.
- Stone floor, 12.3 by 13.4 inches: A single round sits on it with a sliver of stone left over. There is not enough floor to park a second pie.
- Hybrid two-layer insulation: Dense insulation and a double-layered floor are Gozney’s answer to recovery. That pairing is what the small door protects.
- Rolling flame burner: The detachable propane burner throws a flame that curls along the dome and back down. Heat favors the rear, so you rotate.
- Underfloor thermometer: A dial on the side reads the stone, not the air. A pizza base cooks from the stone up, so that reading matters most.
- Folding legs: Three legs retract under the oven for travel. Folded, the whole oven stands 11.4 inches tall.
- Optional wood burner: Gozney sells a detachable wood burner for kindling, charcoal or briquettes. Budget $99.99 at regular price, because only gas comes packed with the oven.
- Peel included: A professional-grade peel, valued by Gozney at $84.99, comes with the oven. Many portable ovens make you buy one.
The list is short on gadgets. Missing entirely: any app, any digital display, any second burner. Gozney has spent its effort on the stone, the insulation and the skin.
Heat is the payoff for that letterbox opening. Gozney claims 950°F at the top, and 700°F in under 20 minutes from cold. Those claims matched how the oven behaved for us.
Across a run of pies, the floor stayed hot. So little heat escapes through the front that the stone barely sags.
Recovery is the real test of a pizza oven, and the Roccbox handles it well. A cold dough ball steals heat from the stone on every bake. With a low dome and thick insulation, the floor bounced back quickly between rounds. No minutes figure for that rebound exists from Gozney, so we offer none.
The weakness is evenness from back to front. The burner sits at the rear, so the crust facing it browns first. Expect to turn each pie two or three times. On a 60 second bake, that is a lot of peel work through a small opening.
Launch technique matters more here than in a wide-mouth oven. Each pie has to clear a 3.5 inch slot without catching its toppings. Keep toppings low and the rim modest. A tall, heavily loaded pie will drag on the lip.
Gozney does not publish a burner output for this model. That leaves no clean way to compare its gas firepower against other ovens on paper.
Build, handling and durability
The Roccbox is built like it expects to be dropped on a tailgate. The stainless frame, silicone shell and stone make a dense, solid unit. Nothing rattles.
At about 44 lb, it is heavy for a portable. Most of that weight is stone and insulation doing their job.
The folding legs feel sturdy and lock firmly. The burner detaches cleanly for packing. The silicone jacket also hides scuffs well, which matters on an oven that travels.
That jacket changes how the oven sits among people. A brushed elbow meets warm rubber rather than bare steel. Around children, that difference may decide the purchase.
Durability has one condition attached. The default warranty is one year. Five years applies only to owners who sign up inside 60 days of buying. That longer cover is strong for a portable oven, but only if you remember the paperwork.
Running costs, upkeep and value
Upkeep is light. Gozney’s cleaning method is simply to run the oven hot. Above 350°C, food left on the stone burns away over about three hours.
That burn-off costs gas. Run it at the end of a pizza night, not as a separate session. For the outside, cool soapy water and a soft cloth are enough. There is no grease tray, because pizza does not drip like a burger.
Propane is the only running cost, and Gozney gives no consumption figure for this burner. A standard tank should cover several pizza nights, but we have no figure to quote.
On price, the Roccbox sat at $399 on Amazon in October 2026. Its list price is $499.99. Gozney’s own store matched it.
That money buys the oven, the burner and a peel. The included peel alone would cost $84.99 bought separately, by Gozney’s own valuation.
The wood burner is the asterisk. At a regular $99.99 the price is fair. It was sold out on Gozney’s store when we checked.
If wood smoke is the point for you, factor in the extra cost and the wait. Judged purely on propane, the price already holds up.
Possible Gozney Roccbox Complaints
- The pizza size is smaller than the headline: Gozney’s site says 12 inches, but its own Amazon artwork says 11. With a mouth 11.9 inches wide, the smaller figure is the honest one. Stretch your dough to 11 inches and the launch gets easier.
- Turning through a slot is fiddly: The low opening leaves little room to lift and spin a pie. Gozney’s included peel is for launching; a narrow round one helps with spinning. New cooks may scorch the rear edge on their first few bakes.
