Weber sells two covers for the same 22 inch kettle. The 7176 costs $19.99, and the Premium 7150 costs $39.99. On paper they share almost everything: polyester, breathable, water resistant, one fastening strap.
So what does half the price leave out? Reading Weber’s own pages side by side gives a short answer. The cheaper cover is the one Weber never describes as resisting fade.
Whether that gap matters depends on where your kettle stands. A grill under a porch roof and a grill on an open lawn get different answers.
First Impressions of the Weber 22 Inch Charcoal Kettle Grill Cover
Weber packs it flat, in a carton thinner than a paperback. Unfolded, it is a plain gray polyester bag shaped like a kettle. A white Weber logo sits on the front. The top is shaped as a shallow dome over the lid.
The weight is the first surprise. Weber’s store lists it at just 290 grams. You can hold it at arm’s length with one hand and drop it over the lid.
At the hem hangs a single black hook-and-loop strap. Weber’s own photograph shows it looped around one leg, just above a wheel. There is no drawstring in that frame, despite what the Amazon details table says.
Weber’s photographs also show where it stops. The hem settles just below the bowl. The legs, the ash catcher area and the wheels stay out in the open.
Key Features of the Weber 22 Inch Charcoal Kettle Grill Cover
Weber says very little about the 7176, and that restraint is itself telling. Its page makes three claims and gives a short spec table. Here is what it actually lists:
- Fitted shape: cut for 22 inch Weber charcoal grills, drawn on three kettles in Weber’s spec plate.
- Breathable, water resistant fabric: Weber’s words, aimed at keeping the grill from rusting.
- One fastening strap: hook-and-loop, wrapped around a leg to keep the cover seated.
- Polyester body, spot clean only: no denier, no coating and no washing instructions beyond that.
What is missing matters as much.
There is no listed vent, no handle and no UV claim on Weber’s page. The Amazon listing does call it UV and water resistant. Weber itself makes that promise only for the Premium 7150. There, the page reads “UV inhibitors in fabric resist fading” as a headline feature.
Fit and coverage
Weber’s wording is broad, naming every 22 inch Weber charcoal grill. So the Original Kettle 22 and Original Kettle Premium 22 both qualify. The Master-Touch 22 is covered too. Weber names no exclusions on the page.
It does sell a different cover for the Performer, though. That one costs $64.99 and is built to go over grill and cart. So read the fit as kettles standing on three legs. A 22 inch bowl on a cart is another matter.
The published sizes are a muddle. Weber’s spec drawing shows 35 inches tall and 23.5 deep. Its archived spec table reads 23 tall and 36 deep. Only the 28.5 inch width agrees everywhere, which hints the table swapped two figures.
Coverage is honest about its limits. The photographs show a cover that protects the lid, bowl and vents. Legs and wheels are left to fend for themselves.
For a kettle, leaving the legs bare costs little. The lid and its vent holes are what rain finds first. The legs simply stand in it.
Weather protection and durability
The rain claim is modest and plain. Weber calls the fabric water resistant and breathable, meant to stop rust forming underneath. It never uses a stronger word than resistant.
Sun is where the two Weber covers part ways. The extra money on the 7150 buys one sentence about sunlight, and nothing else Weber prints. On a kettle that bakes on a south-facing deck, that sentence carries real weight. Under a roof, it barely matters.
No vent appears in any source, so damp air leaves only through the weave. That works when the fabric breathes as promised. A cover pulled over a still-warm grill on a humid night is the harder test.
For durability, the denier is unpublished, and so is any seam detail. Two years of warranty appears in Amazon’s details table. Weber’s page is silent on the term. With so little in writing, durability rests more on trust than proof.
Handling, upkeep and value
Light weight pays off every single weekend.
Weighing 290 grams, it goes on in one motion and comes off just as fast. Closing the strap around a leg takes a few seconds. Nothing here slows down a quick weeknight cook. Pull the strap free, lift, and the grill is ready to light.
Upkeep is limited to a damp cloth. Weber says spot clean only, so ash and pollen come off by hand. When it finally looks tired, it folds back into a space smaller than a cutting board.
Value is the clear strength. At $19.99 at both Weber and Amazon, it costs half the Premium 7150. Against Weber’s $64.99 Performer cover, it costs under a third.
Possible Weber 22 Inch Charcoal Kettle Grill Cover Complaints
- Wind can lift it. A light cover held by one strap gives a gust a handle at the crown. Exposed yards feel this first. A bungee across the legs, or the Performer route of two straps, helps.
- Sun is a gamble. Weber makes no fade claim for this cover. On an unshaded deck the gray may lighten sooner than the 7150 would. That is a choice of price over sunlight, so make it knowingly.
