The Joe Jr is a glazed ceramic egg, and ceramic does not rust. Kamado Joe backs the shell for life. So what is a fitted cover, model KJ15080420, actually protecting?
The answer sits above and below the egg. Look up at the vent cap, then down at the ring it sits in. Both are cast iron. Those are the parts weather can hurt.
That makes this a cover for the iron more than the ceramic. It also raises a second question. A grill sold for road trips needs a cover that fits wherever it ends up. Does this one?

First Impressions of the Kamado Joe Joe Jr Grill Cover
Out of the packet, the cover is a small black dome with a stiff collar. Two lines of red piping circle the shoulders. Kamado Joe says plainly the piping is there for looks. It is the one splash of color.
That collar is where the design thinking went. It is a sleeve shaped to swallow the cast iron vent cap. A handle is sewn over it. You lower the cover by that handle, and the cap drops into its pocket.
Below the shoulders the fabric falls straight. In the maker’s photograph it hangs past the ceramic and over the stand’s legs. Below the hem you can still see the round iron foot of the stand.
One strap with a plastic side-release buckle sits at the hem. Clip it around the stand and the cover is done. There is nothing else to fasten.
Key Features of the Kamado Joe Joe Jr Grill Cover
This is a short list, because the cover is built for one grill and one setup. What stands out is how much of the design points at the vent cap.
- Vent cap sleeve: a sewn pocket on top that houses the cast iron cap. The iron gets its own little roof.
- Top handle: stitched over the sleeve. It gives you one grip to lift the whole cover.
- Single buckle strap: webbing with a side-release clip. Kamado Joe calls it an adjusting clip.
- Solution-dyed polyester: the international page says the color is dyed into the fiber. The US page says only heavy-duty fabric.
- Double stitching: the maker’s stated reinforcement. It is the only construction detail published.
- Full-length cut for grill and stand: sized, in Kamado Joe’s words, to fit both together.
- Cover: a fitted cover made by the grill’s own maker, for one model only.
Fit and coverage
Kamado Joe sizes the Joe Jr and stand at 19.9 by 27.2 inches, wide by tall. Its own chart puts the cover at 30 inches tall and 21 inches across. That leaves a narrow margin around the egg, which is the point of a fitted cut. Amazon’s listing reads slightly larger, at 21.9 by 21.9 by 30.1 inches.
The extra height goes to the sleeve, which clears the vent cap without crushing it. Below, the hem reaches the stand’s legs but not its foot ring. We reviewed that exact setup as the Kamado Joe Joe Jr with Cast Iron Stand.
Put the Joe Jr on its cart, though, and the cut no longer matches. On the cart, the grate rides 31 inches up, per Kamado Joe. Kamado Joe answers that setup with a separate full-length cover, sold inside a cart bundle. So the travel grill gets a cover that fits it in one place only.
Weather protection and durability
The maker’s claims are broad: waterproof, windproof and snowproof, with UV resistant fabric. The two Kamado Joe pages disagree on how far that UV claim goes. The US page says the fabric limits fading. The international page says solution-dyed polyester guarantees no fading at all.
For a kamado, the gaps on those pages count for more. There is no airflow opening in the fabric, and nothing on sealed stitch lines.
A cover that sheds rain but holds damp can be hard on the iron it shelters. For that reason Weather Protection sits at 7.1.
Durability is a little better documented. Double stitching is stated, and the accessory warranty runs two years on materials and workmanship. The fabric grade is not published anywhere. One plastic buckle does all the holding, so a cracked clip leaves the hem loose.
Handling, upkeep and value
Daily handling is where a small round grill pays off. The Joe Jr is a small round grill, so the cover is a small round shell. Undo the buckle and lift it off by the top handle, one handed.
At 82.5 lbs with its stand, the Joe Jr rarely moves far. Its cover comes off and goes back daily.
On price, the cover sits at $59.99 direct from Kamado Joe. That is above the maker’s own $49.99 Dome Cover. On Amazon we saw it at $29.70, against a $54.99 list price. Half the direct price, for a cover the grill’s maker cut, is easy to justify.
One note from the listing belongs here too. Amazon tags this product as frequently returned and gives no reason. Treat it as a reason to confirm your setup before ordering.
Possible Kamado Joe Joe Jr Grill Cover Complaints
- It fits the stand, not the cart. Owners who add the Joe Jr cart lose the fitted cut. Kamado Joe’s own fix is a different, full-length cover sold with the cart. Check which setup your grill lives on before you buy.
- Thin weather documentation. The waterproof claim is clear, but airflow and seam sealing are not described. The two maker pages also disagree on fading. For a grill that stays outside, lift the cover after wet spells so the iron dries.
